Understanding homelessness
Individuals and families without reliable shelter are considered homeless.
Many households without a safe and stable place to live often have to move from location to location simply to have shelter. This may include motels, staying with friends or family members, sleeping in cars, or staying in shelters. Less than one-fifth of those experiencing homelessness live on the streets.
There are many reasons for homelessness which may include: job loss, high housing costs, changed family situations, physical and/or mental illnesses, drug abuse, family break-ups and domestic violence. Anyone is susceptible to these unfortunate events ultimately leading to homelessness and without resources like Family Tree, it may be difficult for vulnerable people to get back on their feet.

Family Tree Housing and Family Stabilization Services works with individuals and families experiencing homelessness, or those at risk of homelessness. We offer an information helpline, homeless prevention services, case management, education and employment services and various other supportive services in order to help people achieve economic independence.

Services provided
The Family Tree Homelessness Program can provide the following services:
- Financial assistance for rent, deposits and utilities
- Home-based case management services
- Referrals to community resources
- Hotline assistance with problem-solving; information and referrals and linkages to community resources
- Crisis assistance including emergency food, hygiene products, 911 cell phones, voicemail phones, etc.
- Self-sufficiency and independent living classes
- Goal setting and planning for activities to overcome barriers to self-sufficiency
- Assistance with obtaining/maintaining employment and educational goals
- Access to and assistance with severe weather shelters
