Volunteer FAQS
General Questions
What volunteer opportunities does Family Tree offer?
Review volunteer and internship opportunities for detailed information on ways you can join Family Tree and make an impact in your community.
How do I set-up an interview or ask questions about opportunities?
If you have any questions regarding Family Tree’s volunteer and internship opportunities, or would like to set up an interview, please contact our Director of Volunteer Engagement at (303) 403-5892 or rhawthorne@thefamilytree.org.
What kind of hourly commitment do you expect from volunteers?
Time commitments vary. We request volunteers commit to a minimum of 4 hours per week for 3-6 months. Group volunteer opportunities are typically one day projects for several hours.
Does Family Tree offer positions for students seeking counseling experience?
Generally, no. Family Tree offers a variety of opportunities working closely with people overcoming child abuse, domestic violence, and homelessness and therefore we seek advocates instead of therapists or counselors.
Volunteer Orientation
Is attendance at volunteer orientation mandatory?
Yes, orientation is required for each volunteer. Volunteer groups who volunteer for one day need not attend an orientation as they will receive an overview of Family Tree at the start of their project.
When and where are the orientations held?
Volunteer orientations are held at Family Tree’s administration office: 3805 Marshall Street, Wheat Ridge, CO 80033.
What if I cannot attend the next orientation?
It’s okay! In the meantime, you may get the ball rolling by researching our volunteer and internship opportunities, set up an interview, and fill out an application. Once you can attend an orientation, you are ready to begin!
Minimum Age and Background Check
Is there a minimum age to volunteer?
Most positions require volunteers to be at least 18 years old. Youth volunteers who are accompanied with a parent for group volunteer opportunities must be 14 years of age.
Does Family Tree run a background check?
Yes! We are committed to providing a safe environment for our clients, volunteers, and staff, thus a thorough background screening is performed for all volunteers, with the exception of volunteer groups. Background checks performed outside of Family Tree will not be accepted. The cost for a background check is $49.50. You will receive instructions on how to complete this check at orientation. Thank you!
