A Mother's Journey of Self-Reliance

Marga, a single mother of three teens, found her family homeless for the first time after losing her job due to injuries she suffered in a car accident. Lacking consistent income, Marga’s primary concern was the safety and stability of her children and constant fear she would not be able to keep her family intact. Not sure where to turn for help, Marga’s journey with Family Tree began at House of Hope, the only shelter for homeless women and their children in Arapahoe County.

Family Tree House of Hope was able to provide the family safe shelter, meals, case management and most importantly a stable structure and the additional resources necessary for the kids to succeed in school. The staff also connected Marga to legal advocacy services and medical resources to ensure she was receiving care for her injuries.

Marga was eventually able to move her family into transitional housing and began receiving services from Family Tree’s Housing Services program. In addition to home-based case management, Family Tree provided the necessary security deposit for the family’s new home, utility and transportation assistance, and support in applying for public benefits due to her disability. Also, knowing the importance of stability as it relates to educational success, Marga’s case manager helped ensure the children remained in the same school they had attended prior to becoming homeless.

Less than two years ago, Marga was completely unsure of herself and the future of her family. Today, Marga and her three kids, Efrain, Francheska, and Marangeli are thriving. Focused on maintaining her housing, Marga has not only kept her family intact, she has changed the entire family’s outlook on the future. And this May, the humble mother of three will celebrate the high school graduation of her oldest twins, which she says is “the best Mother’s Day gift she could ask for."
